The first workshop on extreme contexts took place on October 15 and 16, 2014, in Montreal, Canada. The title was: Strategizing and Organizing in Extreme Contexts: Challenges and Opportunities for a Practice-based Perspective. It was co-organized by the Strategy as Practice Study Group (GéPS), from HEC Montreal, TripleED: Extreme Environments and Everyday Decisions, Umeå School of Business and Economics, Sweden, and CEROS: Centre d’études et de recherches sur les organisations et la stratégie (Projet Darwin), Université Paris Ouest – Nanterre La Défense, France. Forty-five persons attended the workshop (36 professors and 11 PhD students), from the United Kingdom (4), France (5), Sweden (4), USA (3), Germany (2) and Canada (27). The workshop was organized around plenary and parallel sessions. Participants had the occasion to share theoretical and methodological expertise related to the challenges and opportunities of doing research in extreme contexts with a practice lens.
